Sunderland are reportedly interested in taking Chelsea midfielder Christian Atsu on loan in January, despite the fact that the player is currently on a season-long deal at Everton.
The Sunday Mirror claims Chelsea are considering recalling the Ghana international after seeing him make just three starts for Roberto Martinez’s side.
That was surely not what Jose Mourinho would have wanted having seen Atsu shine for Vitesse Arnhem last season. But rather than build on that form the 22-year-old has been used sparingly, accruing just 71 minutes in the league and 248 minutes in total.
Atsu was one of Vitesse’s star performers during his loan spell in Holland and a move to Everton was expected to see him take the next step up, but that has not gone according to plan…at least for now.
As a result, the report claims Sunderland would be keen to bring the winger to the Stadium of Light, and if they do make such a move, you can be sure he would feature far more regularly under Gus Poyet than he has at Goodison Park.
Surely such a factor would be crucial given the potential complications of recalling him early only to send him back out to a rival.
