On this day: Chelsea's £30m Shaw mistake; United offered Adebayor

Luke Shaw

On the 30th November 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Southampton, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 30th November 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 30th November 2013…

Are you Shaw?

Southampton scout Phil Spreadbury was revealing how Chelsea could have had Luke Shaw for free. The now England international moved to Manchester United this summer for a fee in the region of £30 million.

Rated as one of the best young players in the world he grew up a Chelsea fan and Spreadbury said of him:

“I liked Luke as soon as I saw him. He was small, but strong and he was technically good.

“There were a lot of scouts at the tournament, including Chelsea but, as far as I know, nobody else talked to him. Chelsea had already decided not to offer him a place in their academy.

“Luke was a Chelsea fan, but I just told him and his father Paul that Southampton was a small family club, where he would get a better chance of breaking through."

In the end Shaw went on to make his name with The Saints, but there is surely no doubt that Chelsea regret bringing him in now.

Adebayor for United?

It was reported a year ago today that Manchester United could have had Gareth Bale last summer, if they took Emmanuel Adebayor as well.

It was reported that at the end of the season Tottenham were willing to give Adebayor away to United as he was no longer wanted at the club.

If United took him on they would have given them first refusal on Bale, despite him having his heart set on a move to Real.

Of course, that didn't happen.
