The former United goalkeeper is adamant that United must sign a defender in January.
Much of their good form has been down to goalkeeper David De Gea. Today, a former United goalkeeping great has been discussing the performances of the team this season. Peter Schmeichel is considered to be perhaps the best goalkeeper in Manchester United history.
The Dane was today on Soccer AM and had some interesting things to say about Manchester United this season - specifically their defence.
The United defence has come into criticism this season, after Louis Van Gaal only brought in Marcos Rojo to fill the central defensive positions.
This was despite the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand in the summer and the injury proneness of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
And Schmeichel believes that a defensive addition is still needed in the winter.
"The players brought in were all attacking players. Even the year, when they won the Premier League two years ago, it was evident that Vidic and Ferdinand were possibly on their way and we needed to sign defenders. But we haven't signed any defenders. I think they have been chasing one or two for the last 18 months but it hasn't happened.
"But he [Van Gaal] needs to tighten up at the back. He definitely needs to sign defenders and I think he is aware of that. You know the rumour mill, you see a lot of defenders being mentioned and I am sure, once we get to January he will bring someone in and I think it is needed as well."
The likes of Mats Hummels and Ron Vlaar have both been mentioned as potential United targets and it appears that Schmeichel would certainly like to see one of them arrive at Old Trafford.
