Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Lucas Leiva's performance against Stoke

Lucas Leiva

Liverpool fans were full of praise for Lucas after his impressive display against Stoke City.

After playing just 125 minutes of Premier League football so far this season, Lucas Leiva was finally restored to the Liverpool line-up today for their battle with Stoke City.

The Brazilian has been a bit-part figure to date, but in a bid to preserve Steven Gerrard, manager Brendan Rodgers chose to use Lucas in front of the back four in the holding role.

Gerrard has come in for plenty of criticism this season for failing to impress in defensive midfield, leaving 27-year-old Lucas with a great opportunity against Stoke.

He came in and impressed, breaking up play well with interceptions and tackles, screening the back four well and enabling his midfield partners to go forward before being substituted for Gerrard on 75 minutes.

This role is ideal for Lucas, and Liverpool fans were vocal on Twitter in their support of playing Lucas ahead of Gerrard in front of the back four.

Some stated that Gerrard should be left out altogether, but others suggested that he should be used further forward - either way, they seemed to be demanding that Rodgers kept Lucas in the side for the foreseeable future.
