Neil Redfearn is right: Leeds fans shouldn't be worried about Silvestri

Errors have crept into the Leeds goalkeeper's game but his quality has still stood out at Elland Road.

When Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn was asked about Marco Silvestri yesterday, his response was firm. He has faith in the 'top-class' Italian and isn't worried about the goalkeeper's form.

And nor should he - or any Leeds fan - be.

Why some may have expressed concern is only natural, with errors having crept into Silvestri's game recently. But the shot stopper has, generally, been superb for the Yorkshire side so far this campaign - putting in a man-of-the-match display on more than one occasion.

As Opta stats show, the 23-year-old has impressed in several areas so far this Championship campaign.

Above are a selection of the goalkeepers that average the most errors per game in the division. Notably, John Ruddy and Lee Camp make the list - both very able goalkeepers.

For Silvestri's average of errors leading to a goal per game, he claims a reasonable amount of crosses per game. He does lag behind in terms of goal kick accuracy and coming off his line - but look at his save per game average.

In terms of shot stopping, the Italian is one of the best goalkeepers in the division. And one or two goals given away doesn't suddenly change that.

There certainly wouldn't be anything wrong with signing a backup goalkeeper to provide Silvestri with competition. If Leeds did so, they would not be the first club to go that way - Manchester City this summer is a prime example.

But the Italian is the man for the no.1 shirt, even if he commits the occasional error. Most goalkeepers will. It is the ones who make a habit of it that are a worry. Not Silvestri.
