Ray Parlour believes that Per Mertesacker should be the captain of Arsenal, not Mikel Arteta.
Writing on Sportslobster.com following the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday, the former Arsenal star stated: “I think it should be Mertersacker as captain to be honest.
“But i’m looking for leaders all over the pitch, we haven’t had that for a long. Tonight we had more shape, more discipline because they played as a team.”
I don't think Arteta should be Arsenal captain. You know the boys, in your experience who is the best natural lead... http://t.co/FziGwUS96D— Ray Parlour (@RealRomfordPele) November 26, 2014
Parlour did not explain his reason for wanting to have Mertesacker as Arsenal’s skipper, but one can understand why.
For one, Mertesacker is a perennial figure in the Gunners squad. He is a first-choice centre-back for manager Arsene Wenger and has a contract until June 2017.
Midfielder Arteta is also one of Wenger’s mainstays, but his contract with Arsenal runs out at the end of the season.
Moreover, there have been question marks on the form of the Spaniard, who has not always convinced in the defensive midfield role.
But perhaps Wenger sees something in Arteta that many do not. Remember, the 32-year-old was appointed the Arsenal captain in the summer following the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, while Mertesacker had just returned from Brazil as a World Cup winner.
