Philipp Degen's Liverpool career can be best described as 'unspectacular.' Off the top of your head, little comes to mind about his time with the Reds.
But Liverpool fans may be remembering him for a long time to come - and for the wrong reasons.
That's if the now Basel defender puts in a game-changing performance to help knock his former club out of the Champions League. Based on the statistics, it's certainly possible...
|Team||Tackles Won||Mins Played|
|Lars Bender||Bayer 04||5||76|
Indeed, as Opta stats show, Degen won five tackles against Real Madrid last night - the third-highest tally in the whole of Europe during Wednesday's matches.
The European champions were restricted to just the one goal and Degen was a big part of that.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have been particularly poor in terms of their challenges this season (Martin Skrtel and Steven Gerrard failed to even win a tackle against Crystal Palace, for instance). Brendan Rodgers' side also created just five chances against FC Ludogorets last night.
So, if anyone thinks scoring enough to beat Basel and progress to the knockout stages will be easy... think again.
Even if the Reds do manage to take a lead against Basel, however, will they be able to hold on to it?
Liverpool have had a one goal lead after 85 mins six times in all comps this season. They've lost that lead six times.— rastlin2021_lfc (@rastlin2021) November 27, 2014
As the above statistic shows, the Reds seem to lack any discipline of mind this term - and one more late goal could cost them their place in the Champions League. The way things are going, it could be their last taste of European football for some time.
