Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Benjamin Stambouli believes that they can win the Premier League title.
Stambouli won Ligue 1 with Montpellier much against the odds in 2012, and believes that he can repeat the feat in England with his new club Tottenham.
“Montpellier were a very small club,” Stambouli told The London Evening Standard. “Tottenham are maybe not Manchester City or Chelsea if you see the money, but Montpellier were very small.
“That year we beat PSG, Monaco, Marseille, so we showed people if you have a minimum of talent, a very good mentality, if you are friends on the pitch and you give everything for your team-mates, maybe you can do something you couldn’t have hoped for at the beginning of the season.
"We can do it, maybe not now but in the future. We have talent in the squad. We have some players who have all the mental and technical qualities but now we have to think what we really want.”
Stambouli is right in claiming that Tottenham have talented players, but the problem is that the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal have better players.
Results this season have shown Chelsea to be strongest team in the Premier League - and one of the strongest in Europe - while City have top players who won the league last season.
Player-for-player Tottenham will not be able to compete with either Chelsea or City, and it would not be wise to start believing in Spurs’ ability to win the league title anytime soon.
At this moment in time, the North London club’s main objective is to finish in the top four of the Premier League. That has always been Spurs’ aim, and that is how it should be.
