Tottenham: Eriksen's exciting understudy Pritchard can prove Sigurdsson's sale was right

Gylfi Sigurdsson may be impressing at Swansea, but Tottenham Hotspur have reason to be positive thanks to the form of Alex Pritchard on loan.

Tottenham's Christian Eriksen scored a superb goal at the weekend to show why he is so important to the side, and why he kept Gylfi Sigurdsson out of the central attacking role.

Sigurdsson was sold in the summer to Swansea, and rarely got a look in through the centre, often having to play out wide.

The Icelandic international has been excellent since returning to the Liberty Stadium, with seven Premier League assists so far while Eriksen has none.

It's easy to say Spurs made a mistake letting him go, but in the long term having both was never going to work, and it was fairer for the club to allow him to depart.

There may be even more long-term planning behind the decision, with Alex Pritchard impressing on loan and showing he can be Eriksen's understudy, a role which didn't really fit Sigurdsson.

Pritchard has been on loan at Championship side Brentford, and has played a huge role in their march into the play-off positions, just four points off the top.

Pritchard has been a focal point of the attack, and is blossoming with regular football, one of the first names on the teamsheet.

His average of 2.3 key passes per game puts in seventh in the entire Championship, ahead of £11 million striker Ross McCormack and former Arsenal youngster Henri Lansbury.

If Pritchard can stay fit through the season and maintain his form, he will deserve to make the step up to play in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old is young enough not to mind playing second fiddle to Eriksen, but complement him and keep him on his toes.

It's for this reason that long-term, the Sigurdsson sale was a practical one, and Tottenham will be able to hopefully replace the player they sold for free.
