Announced M&A transactions in the telecommunications sector total US$135.6 billion so far during 2014, down 46% from the value registered during the same period last year (US$249.5 billion).
- Telecoms is the only sector to see a decline in M&A from last year, although last year's total was inflated by Verizon’s US$130.3 billion acquisition of Vodafone’s stake in the Verizon Wireless joint venture.
- The telecoms sector accounts for 4.4% of total worldwide announced M&A so far this year.
- Multi-billion deals could soon be announced in the sector as BT Group PLC revealed it is in early stage talks with Telefonica to acquire O2. BT is also rumoured to be in talks with EE. BT’s largest acquisition to date was a deal to double its stake and take control of German wireless company Viag Interkom in 2000.
