Newcastle United prospect Callum Roberts: Barcelona star Lionel Messi is world’s best player

St James Park

Newcastle United prospect Callum Roberts was impressed with Lionel Messi’s heroics for Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Newcastle United youngster Callum Roberts seems to be doing what he has been told: watch Lionel Messi and learn from him.

“Ben (Dawson, Professional Development phase coach) has been talking to him about (Lionel) Messi, about how he doesn't blast everything but sidefoots goals in,” The Magpies’ Football Development manager Peter Beardsley told the club’s official website.

Beardsley’s comments came following Roberts’s brace in the Newcastle United’s Under-21 side’s victory over their Crewe Alexandra counterparts in the Under-21 Premier League Cup tie on Monday (click here to read more).

A day later, the 17-year-old winger was following his coaches’ advice as he followed Barcelona’s 4-0 victory over Apoel Nicosia away from home in the Champions League.

Messi was once again the star of the show for the Spanish giants on Tuesday, scoring a brilliant hat-trick in the Group F game which saw him become the all-time top scorer in Europe’s premier club competition.

The Argentina international forward is widely regarded as the best player in the world, and Roberts seems to be of the same opinion.

This is what the Newcastle prospect made of Messi’s performance.
