Alonso was a prominent figure for Bayern Munich in last night's clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, which City ended up winning 3-2.
Alonso was Bayern's pivot at the heart of the midfield and got on the scoresheet in the first half of his side's 3-2 defeat with a free-kick, but he was also responsible for the other equaliser in the game as his pass was intercepted by Stevan Jovetic to allow Sergio Aguero to make it 2-2, and give City a lifeline in the Champions League.
Despite his error, it didn't stop Liverpool fans being nostalgic and wishing the Spaniard was the man pulling the strings at the heart of their midfield.
Alonso was sold for around £30 million in the summer of 2009 and has received many plaudits from fans of all clubs for his ability to dictate play in the middle of the park - and with him moving to the Allianz Arena in the summer, some suggest that Liverpool should have tried to sign one of their favourite ex-players.
Here is what a few of them had to say:

To think Alonso, Song, Alderwield were all available this summer...sickening to think we didn't try for any of them. #lfc— Anfield HQ (@AnfieldHQ96) November 25, 2014
