This summer Manchester City once again signed a great player from their apparent feeder club Arsenal.
The player in question was Bacary Sagna. It was known for a long time that Sagna was leaving Arsenal in the summer. With his contract expiring and Arsenal refusing to budge on their policy of over-30's contracts he was always going to leave.
But the rumour mill always suggested that he would not be joining a Premier League team. Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, AS Monaco, AS Roma. A huge list of teams saw their names linked with Sagna across the continent.
So instead he joined Manchester City - following Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy, Emmanuel Adebayor and Samir Nasri in making the same move.
He was instantly criticised by many for chasing a final pay day whilst others understood he felt more likely of silverware at The Etihad then he did while an Arsenal player.
But since the switch, things have not gone exactly to plan for Sagna since leaving Arsenal.
He always faced an uphill battle trying to force Pablo Zabaleta from the starting XI at City. The Argentine had been the best right-back in the Premier League in recent years and Sagna has indeed struggled to replace him. When he has featured, the performances have not yet won over City fans.
Yesterday he was again not up to scratch for City as they defeated Bayern Munich 3-2. The ten men of Bayern took a 2-1 lead when Robert Lewandowski bullied Sagna out at the back-post to score an impressive header from inside the box.
Sagna was hauled off in the second half and luckily many would have forgotten his poor performance thanks to Sergio Aguero's usual heroics.
But not Arsenal fans.
Here is how some of them reacted in Twitter...
Sagna proves that playing for a new club doesn't necessarily invigorate your career. Still as crap as when he left Arsenal— Adnan Rub (@AdnanRub) November 25, 2014
Sagna has turned into the biggest victim. Gone from starting every week at Arsenal to cleaning Zabaleta's boots at City. LOL LOL LOL— Nathaniel (@NathanielC_97) November 25, 2014
Quite happy Arsenal let sagna go, cos he is crap !!— Aaron Turner (@aaronturner18) November 25, 2014
You'd of played the full game at Arsenal Sagna but that's non of my business— kaïs (@Noumi_ox) November 25, 2014
Sagna you shouldn't have left arsenal— ̷̐ ̈́DhatweirD_niggiE (@Still_0bannon) November 25, 2014
I'm not even mad at Sagna tbh. The guy wanted one last pay day before he retired. Plus I don't want Arsenal paying a 31 y/o £180k a week.— Marco. (@RelatedArsenal) November 25, 2014
Never saw Sagna get beaten to a header at Arsenal. Bench effect— Muhib Kidwai (@muhibkidwai) November 25, 2014
Arsenal aren't missing Sagna with weak defending like that. Easy peasy for Lewandowski— Gentos (@JulianGent) November 25, 2014
Arsenal pulled a blinder giving Sagna away— Tom (@TomPhillips97) November 25, 2014
