West Ham & Sunderland linked with ex-Aston Villa midfielder Jean Makoun

The 31-year-old could be available for as little as £1 million in January.

Ask Aston Villa fans what memories they have of Jean Makoun and the answer could be very brief.

Indeed, it may even be a struggle for some to come up with any.

There were the reports that the Cameroonian's Villa future was once in jeopardy because he could not speak a word of English. And there was perhaps the fact that Makoun managed to work under three different managers at Villa Park.

By the summer of 2013, however, the midfielder's time at Aston Villa - begun after Gerard Houllier signed him for £6 million, was over. Makoun was released, with Rennes taking him on after he spent the previous season on loan at the French club.

But Villa fans could be seeing more of him this season if reports are to be believed. He won't be featuring for them, though, but could, in fact, be playing for West Ham United or Sunderland.

According to the Daily Mirror, both the Hammers and the Black Cats are battling for the 31-year-old's signature in January, with Makoun available for as little as £1 million.

The midfielder's contract expires next summer and West Ham are said to be an interested party - so too Sunderland. Perhaps his second Premier League spell will prove more fruitful.
