Southampton player ratings: £10m man Forster struggles; Clyne exceptional

Clyne Tackles Gervinho

Southampton's player ratings from their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last night.

Fraser Forster - 4

The Southampton stopper will have to take the blame for costing his side two points. Saints were rarely threatened throughout the match and his error, which allowed Gabriel Agbonlahor to score, was completely avoidable.

Ryan Bertrand - 7

Another impressive display for the Chelsea loanee. He has showing that he has the ability to be a very competent defender in the Premier League and Ronald Koeman will hope to get him on a permanent deal sooner rather than later.

Toby Alderweireld - 7

The Belgian defender was composed throughout the match and he continues to impress during his first spell in English football.

Jose Fonte - 6

Not as involved as his centre-back partner, but he still did a solid job when called upon.

Nathaniel Clyne - 8

Man of the match. The right-back's reputation continues to grow and his goal last night was reward for an excellent performance.

Victor Wanyama - 7

Powerful and composed, Wanyama's display in the centre of the pitch helped Southampton control the match.

Morgan Schneiderlin - 6

A decent performance from the Frenchman, even if he wasn't at his most creative.

Dusan Tadic - 6

Delivered some eye-catching passes, but could not add to his tally of six assists for the season. The Serbian is always an entertaining player to watch and he provided some moments of excitement again last night.

Shane Long - 5

Nothing really came off for Long, who struggled to get into the game in a more central position. Looks unlikely to keep Steven Davies out of the team when the Northern Irishman returns to fitness.

Sadio Mane - 5

The Southampton summer buy was always spritely, but his final ball as lacking throughout. A danger because of his pace, Mane needed to show more composure in the final third to maximise his threat.

Graziano Pelle - 5

Not the Italian's best display. He struggled to get into the match and was well marshalled by the Villa backline.
