Earlier this season it was reported that Liverpool were on the verge of signing free agent Victor Valdes.
With doubts remaining over the future of Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, the former Barcelona star was tipped as a cheap and savvy alternative, but we all know what happened next.
With Liverpool reportedly pulling out a of deal due to certain alleged demands regarding a contract, Valdes instead headed to Old Trafford, where he is currently training in the hope of earning a new deal somewhere.
The suggestion is he will remain in Manchester, but if David de Gea stays it would be surprising if Valdes agrees to what would be a prolonged spell on the United bench, no matter how well he gets on with Louis van Gaal.
The possibility of a move to Liverpool after all should not be discounted, with Mignolet coming in for criticism and Brendan Rodgers’ alleged unwillingness to do business more to do with doubts over the player’s fitness than anything else.
If Valdes gets back to his best and proves his problems are behind him, Liverpool would have no reason not to sign him, so could United be doing their fierce rivals a big favour?
It is certainly possible, with Valdes’ hypothetical arrival at Anfield sure to improve their faltering back-line.
For now Valdes will simply want to get back to what he does best, but if De Gea signs a new long-term deal at United as their fans will hope, do not be surprised if his countryman heads to Liverpool after all, just a little later than first planned and after an unlikely stop-off down the road.
