United morning news: Striker reveals failed £3m move; Gundogan speaks about the future

Ilkay Gundogan warming up for Germany

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has revealed he almost signed for Rangers during his time at Feyenoord.

The Netherlands star would ultimately move to Arsenal before joining United in a £24million deal, but in quotes published by the Daily Record he said he was close to a £3million move to Scotland.

“I was still playing for Feyenoord and I wanted to go there,” van Persie said. “I was ready to go but they first needed to sell one player before they could buy me.”

Ultimately the move did not go through and the rest, as they say, is history.

In other news, reported United target Ilkay Gundogan has been talking about his future having returned from injury.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is one of a few in that position to be regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford, and in quotes published by the Manchester Evening News, the German international said, “Playing outside Germany is one of my big goals.

“If one day I leave here, I’d like to play in Spain or for one of the big clubs in England.”

Gundogan would dramatically improve United’s midfield if he arrived and stayed fit, but ongoing reports suggest it could in fact be Kevin Strootman who signs for United in due course.
