The five craziest Manchester United transfer rumours - Featuring £200m worth of stars

Nemanja Vidic

Manchester United may buy in January, but some of the deals speculated have been less than credible.

Manchester United are likely to be in the market for new players in January, but as Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward have maintained, they are not looking for stop-gaps.

In recent weeks the rumour mill has gone into overdrive, and some of the suggested moves in and out of the club have been ridiculous to say the least.

Here is a look at five of the craziest transfer rumours to emerge over the last month:

Ander Herrera to be sold

Spanish newspaper Sport incorrectly claimed Herrera's recent lack of playing time was due to him being out of favour with Louis van Gaal, rather than due to fitness issues, and that he could be sold as a result. Fast-forward a week and The Express have resultantly claimed the manager has accepted an offer from Bayern for Herrera as part of a swap deal to sign Xherdan Shaqiri. This altogether ignores of course, the fact that when he has played, the Spaniard has been one of United's best midfielders this season.

Re-signing Vidic

Could United re-sign Vidic? The Serbian has not had a good start at Inter and was omitted from new manager Roberto Mancini's line-up in the derby against AC Milan. He was clearly not a fan of David Moyes, but had he known Louis van Gaal would be boss now we wonder if he would have stuck around? With United's injuries and the fact he was never replaced, it's plausible, but the sources are not credible. The Express claimed earlier this month the defender was 'set to return', but there's no movement on it as yet.

Loaning Vermaelen

Another desperately poor Express transfer exclusive, they claimed last night Thomas Vermaelen is a loan target for the Red Devils. He has not played for Barcelona all season due to injury, so that's the last thing United need right now, and then there is the fact Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizaretta stated today the Belgian may need another operation. A non-starter in every sense.

Sell Di Maria, sign Bale

The Express (again) published a report this month claiming United want to sell Angel di Maria to PSG to fund a move for Gareth Bale. This was based on the fact Di Maria told French journalists he could look to play in Ligue 1 'one day', more likely out of being polite than anything else. Quite how this has turned into United looking to axe him to sign Bale, is anybody's guess.

Sign Sneijder

This old chestnut re-appears every month, and even this Monday, it has done so again. Perhaps the big shock is The Express missed out on this scoop, with TalkSPORT instead claiming the former Champions League winner could still head to Old Trafford five years after he was most pressingly linked. The radio station claim United are 'on alert' for the Dutchman after having recently been benched. Now 30, the link with former international boss Louis van Gaal is the only hope for this finally coming off, but there just isn't a place for the declining star in the United side.
