Manchester United have been linked with a surprise loan move for Barcelona centre-back Thomas Vermaelen.
The Belgian international was tipped to move to Old Trafford from Arsenal in the summer but instead the 29-year-old moved to La Liga. However he has yet to make his senior debut for his new club following a string of injuries and he is now being linked with a swift if temporary exit.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims both United and Arsenal are interested in bringing the player in on loan, considering both sides have defensive issues with injuries and suspensions robbing them of many players at times this season.
But in truth there is only one place for the Vermaelen rumour and that is in our transfer bin.
Why either club would move for a player who continues to be blighted by injury is a mystery. United have seen Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett blossom in the absence of more experienced defenders while if Arsenal put faith in Hector Bellerin and played Calum Chambers as a centre-back ahead of Nacho Monreal they would look considerably more solid.
A loan move is a quick fix, a temporary solution, and signing Vermaelen would be neither of those things as his injury record suggests he would be on the side-lines more than on the pitch.
A move to United makes no sense while a return to Arsenal is only slightly more believable given his time in North London. But in truth, mark this one down as a rumour that will never be anything more than that.
