Arsenal fans react on Twitter to failure to register Olivier Giroud for Champions League football

Giroud Celebrates

Olivier Giroud will not play against Borussia Dortmund or Galatasaray, due to an admin error by Arsenal.

Arsenal take on Borussia Dortmund this week but the man who nearly turned the match against Manchester United will be sitting in the stands.

Despite recovering from injury, Olivier Giroud will not play, because he is not eligible to do so.

SkySports report that Giroud was not registered on Arsenal's Champions League squad list to UEFA, and it is too late to amend the situation.

Arsenal had expected him to return only in late December, but clearly it looks as though they should have gambled he could be back early.

To be fair to the Gunners, if anything their unfit players usually suffer setbacks rather than good news, so it would have taken a leap of faith to predict his early return. Yet now he has, it's they who look silly for failing to consider 'what if', and registering him with the squad.

Had Danny Welbeck been injured against Manchester United at the weekend, this would have been an even bigger controversy, and Arsenal will need him to remain fit for the trip to Galatasaray should they need a result from the final game in Turkey; otherwise the next man up is Yaya Sanogo.

Arsenal can avoid this situation by beating Dortmund and hoping Galatasaray beat third placed Anderlecht, yet that will give the Gunners an incentive to win in Turkey to give themselves a chance of finishing top, which at present looks unlikely given they are five points behind with two games to go.
