Arsenal take on Borussia Dortmund this week but the man who nearly turned the match against Manchester United will be sitting in the stands.
Despite recovering from injury, Olivier Giroud will not play, because he is not eligible to do so.
Arsenal had expected him to return only in late December, but clearly it looks as though they should have gambled he could be back early.
To be fair to the Gunners, if anything their unfit players usually suffer setbacks rather than good news, so it would have taken a leap of faith to predict his early return. Yet now he has, it's they who look silly for failing to consider 'what if', and registering him with the squad.
Had Danny Welbeck been injured against Manchester United at the weekend, this would have been an even bigger controversy, and Arsenal will need him to remain fit for the trip to Galatasaray should they need a result from the final game in Turkey; otherwise the next man up is Yaya Sanogo.
Arsenal can avoid this situation by beating Dortmund and hoping Galatasaray beat third placed Anderlecht, yet that will give the Gunners an incentive to win in Turkey to give themselves a chance of finishing top, which at present looks unlikely given they are five points behind with two games to go.
Here is a look at how fans reacted on Twitter to the news...
Would it be considered a major screw up that Giroud is ineligible for Champions League? Who does that fall on? He did return early #afc— Maple Leaf Gooner (@MMcDonald0174) November 24, 2014
So Giroud cant play vs Dortmund due to not being registered by Arsenal for the CL. Can we make ourselves look any more stupid? #afc— Rikki Betts (@Rikkib91) November 24, 2014
Giroud can't play vs Dortmund this week because we forgot to register him. If anything sums up Arsenal's clueless management... #afc— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) November 24, 2014

Anyone who thinks Wenger hasn't lost it, should ask themselves why Giroud wasn't included in the CL squad and Diaby was! time to go fella!— Ben Green (@AFCRocket147) November 24, 2014
