Arsenal's lack of a defensive midfielder has been exposed on countless occasions this season, a fault exploited by Manchester United at the weekend.
Meanwhile a player deemed surplus to requirements at the Gunners was impressing in the role, out on loan.
Francis Coquelin was sent to Charlton Athletic at the beginning of the month, to get some regular football and aid his career with his Arsenal contract expiring in June 2015.
He starred in a 0-0 draw against Millwall at the weekend, playing only his third game for the club.
|Match||Won Tackle||Interception Won||Passing Accuracy||Won Contest||Mins Played|
|Francis Coquelin||Charlton vs Millwall||3||7||72%||3||90|
Coquelin made more interceptions than the whole of Millwall's midfield put together (6), and only two less than his entire Charlton team (9). He also won more tackles than any other Addicks midfielder.
The 23-year-old was only used once by Arsene Wenger this season, deployed out of position at left-back in the Capital One Cup, and his manager's refusal to try him out as a solution could turn out to be an oversight.
While Coquelin may not be a long-term answer for Arsenal, could he have helped this month, - the answer to that appears to be yes.
As for next, the Frenchman's loan expires on December 1, and the Gunners may want to think twice before he is sent out on loan again.
Here is how Charlton fans reacted on Twitter to his display...
I'd love Coquelin to sign on a perm, he was unreal yesterday #cafc— Charlie Benn (@CharlieBenn_) November 23, 2014
Coquelin looked better than anyone on the pitch today. Such composure & quick feet. Buyens was a big loss. Should've beaten them #cafc— Aaron (@aaronpaul90) November 22, 2014
Dear Mr Wenger can we please keep Coquelin? Thanks love all at #cafc— Sue Gallop (@Suzysue8) November 22, 2014
