Antonio Valencia is claiming Manchester United's first strike against Arsenal despite it going down as an own-goal.

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia has claimed the first goal in his side’s 2-1 victory against Arsenal on Saturday evening.

The result was huge for Louis van Gaal’s side, as they finally won an away game under the Dutchman and took three points off one of the so-called “top four” after a draw and a defeat to Chelsea and Manchester City respectively.

The match turned in the 56th minute, when Wojciech Szczseny collided with Kieran Gibbs as he tried to clear an Ashley Young cross. Antonio Valencia fired the ball back in and Gibbs put through his own net.

However, the Ecuador international has since taken to Instagram to suggest he will be claiming the glory – at least until the dubious goal panel has its say.

Posting a picture of himself celebrating with United teammate Marouane Fellaini, Valencia wrote, “Thank god my score a goal for my brother and for completing 200 games with Manchester United.”

The result took United up to fourth in the table and could be a huge turning point in their season. As for Arsenal, they have a lot of work to do in the weeks ahead…
