Arsenal star: We played our best game of the season against Manchester United

Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta says considering the opposition, their performance against Manchester United was the best this season.

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta says he is devastated the Gunners failed to beat Manchester United.

The club captain believes the pain is even more sharp because they played in his opinion their best match of the season so far.

He told "I am shocked we did not win this game, I cannot believe it still.

"I think we played our best game of the season, in terms of what we demand from ourselves with the quality of our attack, how early we won the ball back, how consistent we were throughout the game, the number of chances we created, and all that considering the opposition we were playing against."

So is Arteta right? Taking into his comment regarding the level of opposition, we have pulled the stats from Arsenal's games this season against teams who finished within the top seven in the Premier League last season.

MatchPossession PercentageShotsChances CreatedSuccessful Final Third PassesBall Recovery
Arsenal Arsenal vs Tottenham 68 16 10 177 55
Arsenal Arsenal vs Man Utd 61 23 21 131 56
Arsenal Everton vs Arsenal 54 13 10 157 55
Arsenal Chelsea vs Arsenal 53 10 9 143 69
Arsenal Arsenal vs Man City 45 15 10 127 80

In two of five key areas, Arteta is correct. Arsenal had by far the most shots, and created the highest number of chances in the game against United than in any other against their competitors. The 21 key passes made was more than double their efforts in any of the other games, asking real questions as to just how they only scored once.

The 1-1 draw against Tottenham actually saw them record a higher percentage of possession, and 46 more passes in the final third than against United.

In terms of winning the ball back, Arsenal did so 56 times against United, a low figure compared to the 80 occasions they did so versus Manchester City.
