On this day: Manchester United stalwart signs new deal; Everton star on Liverpool deal

Carrick

On the 22nd November 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Everton and Liverpool.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 22nd November 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 22nd November 2013…

Carrick contract

Manchester United stalwart Michael Carrick agreed a new deal at the club a year ago today. The 2006 signing from Tottenham Hotspur had become a favourite at the club in his time at Old Trafford - winning plenty of silverware in that time as well.

He agreed on an extension until 2015 with the option to extend it until 2016.

Carrick said of his new deal at Manchester United:

"It is great to extend my contract at this great club. I am really enjoying my football. The club has gone through a few changes and working under David Moyes has been fantastic. I have won many trophies in my years playing here and I am looking forward to achieving more in the future."

Carrick has been injured for the majority of this season, so it remains to be seen if he is a major part of Louis van Gaal's plans - and if his future lies at Manchester United.

Liverpool for Barry

Gareth Barry was discussing his near move to Liverpool.

The midfielder, now an Everton player, made it clear that Rafa Benitez wanted him at Liverpool as a replacement for Xabi Alonso.

He said:

“I was very, very close to joining Liverpool. I had told Martin O’Neill I wanted to leave but ultimately they didn’t stump up the fee.

“The big thing with the Liverpool fans was that it looked like one of their favourites was leaving, in Alonso, and they looked at me as the reason for it. That’s fans I suppose, the fans heard he was leaving, I was coming in and put two and two together...

“No-one knows what that move could have done for me, whether it would have been good for me and Liverpool, but there was nothing I could have done about it."

Now Barry is a hero at Liverpool's city rivals Everton.
