Liverpool's Emre Can: Steven Gerrard inspired my goal against Chelsea

The Reds midfielder has revealed that a motivational pep-talk from his captain inspired his recent goal against the Blues.

Emre Can's goal against Chelsea was a special moment for the young Liverpool star.

Although the Reds ended up losing to Jose Mourinho's men, Can was proud to net his first Anfield goal - and is even prouder that he was inspired by Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

Indeed, according to the 20-year-old, Gerrard gave him a motivational pep-talk ahead of the clash with the Blues, leading to what briefly appeared to be a Liverpool resurgence.

“Before the Chelsea game, Steven said to me, ‘This is one of the big games and it’s your time to shine,'" Can is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

“I went out there and scored – and that was down to the piece of advice the captain gave to me.

“The position in the middle of the field is the position I’m most comfortable with and where I can improve the most.

“I hope to be similar to Gerrard. But it isn’t going to be easy because he’s been so successful. I’m trying to get the best out of myself.”
