The Bayern Munich midfielder is still hopeful of an Anfield reunion in this season's Champions League.
Yes, the Spaniard is no longer a squad member at Anfield and has even moved once more in his career without returning to the Reds - but Alonso hides nothing when it comes to his love for all things LFC.
And, during a reunion with former team-mate Jamie Carragher, the 32-year-old admitted he still has a 'special connection' with the club.
"There was a shock! I was thinking, 'I had a chance to go back to Anfield… aye, yai, yai'! I would have loved that. I'd love to play there once more," Alonso told Carragher in an interview for the Daily Mail.
"This season in the knockout stages? You never know. I still feel I have a special connection with Liverpool fans.
"Remember those nights we had? We felt we could beat anyone in Europe. Winning in Istanbul was beyond my dreams."
Liverpool's chances of qualification to the Champions League knockout stages, of course, appear a little more remote than Alonso is perhaps leading on - but the midfielder himself showed that anything is possible as far as the Reds are concerned.
Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers' side travel to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
