STATS: Mings, Forsyth, Lichaj or Warnock: Who is the Championship's best left-back?

Derby County's Craig Forsyth, Ipswich Town's Tyrone Mings, Leeds United's Stephen Warnock, Nottingham Forest's Eric Lichaj and Middlesbrough's George Friend are all analysed...

In light of the interest from the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal in Ipswich Town left-back Tyrone Mings, we take a look at how he stacks up against the other left-backs in the division.

According to the Mirror, Chelsea see the Ipswich Town defender as the potential successor to John Terry's throne despite predominantly being a left-back.

The 21-year-old has earned some well-deserved praise for his performances this season but a lot of credit must go to the Ipswich scouting and coaching staff, who found and turned a non-league left-back into a potential top four Premier League player seemingly overnight.

However, how does Mings compare of fellow Championship left-backs, and is he rightfully being dubbed the best left-sided defender outside the top-flight in English football?

Here are the stats:

Craig Forsyth Derby 2 12 638 103 40 37 1,348 339 1,530
Tyrone Mings Ipswich 2 23 420 98 30 35 1,228 390 1,376
Jack Robinson Huddersfield 1 14 339 68 26 23 764 210 990

George Friend Middlesbrough 0 15 574 116 49 26 1,241 348 1,439
Eric Lichaj Forest 0 8 275 51 18 17 681 162 916
Martin Olsson Norwich 0 6 470 34 8 13 896 205 1,140

As one can see by the numbers, the Ipswich defender is well-deserving of the label as one of the best in the division but whether he is the best is another question.

When it comes to assists, he is joint-top with Derby County defender Craig Forsyth, who was whoscored's highest rated left-back last season and following on in top spot for this campaign, too.

Mings does better the Derby defender for key passes but the Scotland international reigns supreme over Mings in every other category.

Forsyth is at the top of the pile for accurate passes, touches and tackles won, but Friend shades the Derby man in physical duels and aerial battles.

Stephen Warnock is the most careful on the ball, losing possession less than half the amount of Tyrone Mings, who is the Championship's most guilty player for giving the ball away:

  TeamPoss Lost AllMins Played
Tyrone Mings Ipswich 390 1,376
Michail Antonio Forest 361 1,419
Jordan Obita Reading 354 1,526
Darren Randolph Birmingham 349 1,432
George Friend Middlesbrough 348 1,439

According to whoscored's rating system, Craig Forsyth remains the division's best left-back following on from last season but, given the praise Mings has received recently, do the numbers tell the correct story?
