Manchester United fans in split decision over loanee's potential return

Nani Flip

Manchester United supporters were split in a recent poll when asked if they wanted to see loan star Nani return to Old Trafford when his deal in Portugal ends.

Manchester United fans struggled to provide a conclusive answer when asked by local newspaper Manchester Evening News if they wanted to see Nani return to Old Trafford.

Once touted to be on a par with Ronaldo, it certainly hasn't been plain sailing for the 28-year-old at United and despite playing over 200 games for them, over eight different seasons, he's struggled to win the fans over.

However, going by the recent poll, it seems like the loan move to Sporting has endeared him to United fans as much as anything he produced in his time in Manchester.

Although, unsurprisingly, the majority was against Nani returning to Old Trafford, with 55% voting no. The Portuguese winger was able to pull 45% of the votes for yes in a poll that only a few months ago would surely have been voted no by a landslide.

Nani, for the best part of seven years, wowed and frustrated supporters at Old Trafford as, on occasion, he would produce the seemingly impossible. However, more often than not, he would leave the United faithful scratching their heads, frustrated and perplexed by his decisions during games.

Since moving back to Sporting Lisbon, Nani has become a whole different player and the consistency he struggled so long for in England has suddenly become a key aspect of his game.

In his 13 appearances for Sporting, he has scored five goals and assisted in a further four. In fact, three of his five goals have come in Champions League, as well as one of his four assists. A fantastic record for any player at a standard that high.

Nevertheless, it's not only critics he has got to win round at United as Louis van Gaal's current system seems to have no place for a player of Nani's style. Without out-and-out wingers, he would have to challenge the likes of Mata, Rooney, Januzaj and many others for the number 10 spot in the side.

Mission impossible, some might say, but clearly some United fans are impressed with the winger's resurgence.
