Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Jack Wilshere is not the answer in midfield for Arsenal.
The Gunners desperately need a specialist holding midfielder, with Arsene Wenger deciding not to buy one in recent transfer windows.
Wilshere has been played in the position for England by Roy Hodgson, sparking debate over whether he should be given a chance there for the Gunners. Redknapp however believes another Arsenal star is the answer.
He told Sky Sports: "I don’t believe that’s Jack Wilshere. He has a lot to offer going forward, so why restrict him to defensive midfield?
"Their answer is right in front of them – Calum Chambers. I’m convinced he’ll end up playing that holding role for Arsenal. He’s so well suited to it.
"He’s not lightning but he’s quick enough, he’s comfortable on the ball, he’s a good passer, he organises his team-mates well, he can tackle and he loves defending. Plus, with his height, he can also slip into defence if Arsenal lose the ball. He’s tailor-made for that role."
Arsene Wenger has previously suggested Chambers can play in the position, but his versatility to play right-back and centre-back has seen him moved around.
Right now with injuries in defence, it's essential he plays in the back four, and until Laurent Koscielny or Mathieu Debuchy return, he will remain there.
So in the mean time, with Mikel Arteta out in midfield too, Arsene Wenger could do worse than give Jack Wilshere a chance rather than veteran Mathieu Flamini.
