Arsenal v Manchester United – Who have been superior this season?

How Arsenal compare to Manchester United ahead of their Premier League clash at the Emirates stadium…

Arsenal Vs UnitedArsenal host Premier League rivals Manchester United on Saturday in what is widely expected be a fascinating encounter and the match of the weekend.

The two clubs dominated the Premier League in terms of titles and prestige in the first decade of its reforming, but sides such as Chelsea and Manchester City have now broken up their dominance.

This season after 11 matches, both teams find themselves in sixth and seventh - 12 and 13 points respectively - behind league leaders Chelsea with a top-four spot now realistically the primary objective.

Despite just one point separating the two teams, the statistics show that the Gunners have performed far better than the Old Trafford outfit on average this season.

As per the head-to-head graphic provided by Opta Stats, Arsene Wenger’s men come out on top in all but one category and do so in a dominating fashion.

From a creative perspective, the North Londoners have scored more goals, crafted more chances and have tested the goalkeeper on more occasions than their opponents on Saturday.

The Red Devils have accomplished more accurate crosses with their £59.7 million record signing Angel di Maria evidently providing a huge attacking threat down the left flank.

One area which will disappoint United boss Louis van Gaal, however, is the Old Trafford outfit’s poor defensive record illustrated by the goals conceded and their lack of tackles completed.

Despite Wenger’s men taking a hammering from a number of pundits for their poor defending this season, they actually stand up favourably compared to United’s backline.

In possession, the Gunners have completed more accurate passes and average a slightly better 61.3% possession percentage, a figure which they might be expected to achieve on Saturday.

However, United are renowned for their ability to break at speed and Van Gaal might just be happy to hand over possession in order to utilise the space on the counter and the pace of Rooney and Di Maria.

The Red Devils have a mixed record at the Emirates in recent seasons, but despite the Gunners’ favourable season statistics many observers feel a draw is the most likely outcome.
