Sunderland manager hopes to have Giaccherini back in action in a week's time.
Sunderland boss Gus Poyet says Italian international Emanuele Giaccherini is closing on a return.
The midfielder has made only three Premier League appearances this season.
This weekend's trip to Leicester is too soon for him, but Poyet is confident he will rejoin the squad ahead of Chelsea's visit in a week's time.
Summer signing Billy Jones is also back in contention, himself struggling with injury after his arrival from West Brom.
Poyet told Sunderland's website: "Jones and Giaccherini are close; Giacchy I think will be next week.
“It’s just a matter of making sure they come in at the right time without forcing them.
“We’ve seen that players can have setbacks so we need to be careful, but they are very close.”
Giaccherini, 29, made just one start, in the 0-0 draw with Burnley in September. The only time he has played 90 minutes this season is for Italy.
In his matches played he managed to record a 92.7 per cent pass success rate, and create two goalscoring chances.
