Scottish media praises Jack Wilshere's performance in England's 3-1 win

Jack Wilshere earned plaudits north of the border for his performance in England's 3-1 win over Scotland

Jack Wilshere has won admiration in Scotland after he dominated the middle of the pitch for England in their emphatic 3-1 victory.

The 22-year-old, who picked up his 26th England cap in the process, rounded off a fantastic week as he was able to build on his Man of the Match performance against Slovenia just days earlier.

England, with Wilshere as the hub of the team, were able to dominate a tired looking Scotland side with relative ease as they earned the result the performance deserved.

It was the Arsenal man's killer pass that opened the scoring when he found teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who headed home despite having just inches of room inside the box and Wayne Rooney did the rest.

After the match, pundits in Scotland's national newspapers praised the Arsenal midfielder and the part he played in the brilliant England win.

Writing for STV, former England captain Terry Butcher said: ''Tonight I thought he [Wilshere] was absolutely brilliant. He made tackles, covered the ground and pressed the ball.

''When he got the ball through the middle, he looked like he could score goals. When he went through the middle, James Milner just tucked in.

''I felt sorry for the Scots because they put so much into the game on Friday and as the match wore on it showed they had a few weary legs.''

On Wilshere's performance and quality for the assist, the Scotsman newspaper wrote: ''Jack Wilshere, an intelligent and probing presence at the hub of England's midfield, displayed all of his nous and vision to float in a cross which picked out his Arsenal teammate Oxlade-Chamberlain's perfectly-timed run in behind a flat-footed Scotland defence.

And, in a match rating article on the England team, the Herald Scotland newspaper gave Wilshere an eight - the joint highest with Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rooney - further commenting: ''Not exactly a holding player but possessed with loads of ability, as witnessed by the centre he speared over for the goal. A pest all night and could have grabbed a third.''

The highly quality performance by the midfielder caps off a fantastic international break for Wilshere, and with Manchester United up next, he will be eager to carry on in a similar fashion for Arsenal in the big game this weekend.
