Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has made it clear which player he wants to see next at the club: Sami Khedira.
The Real Madrid midfielder was strongly linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in the summer transfer window, but nothing concrete materialised.
Germany international Khedira’s current contract with the 2014 Champions League winners runs out next summer, and he has yet to agree a new deal with Madrid.
Mertesacker has now revealed that he wants his German compatriot to move to Arsenal, adding that Mesut Ozil is also trying his best to convince Khedira to switch to the Emirates.
Per "I'm up to more quality Germans to the club, Ozil and I spoke with Khedira a few time to join Arsenal. His contract is up next summer"— Darren (@DarrenArsenal1) November 19, 2014
Khedira is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and has proved that during his time at Madrid.
However, since last season the German has not been at his best. Having missed a large chunk of the 2013-14 campaign due to injury, he has struggled for playing time this term.
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is still believed to consider Khedira as a key player in his team, and with the injury to Luka Modric, the former Stuttgart star could regain his place in the starting line-up (click here to read more).
Khedira himself has said that he is not looking to leave Madrid in the January transfer window, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is unlikely to splash out the cash to lure him in the middle of the season.
There is a distinct possibility that Khedira could become available for a free next summer, but as of now, he may not be that easy to prise away from Madrid.
