Paul Merson has said that Jack Wilshere is “lost” at Arsenal.
The former Arsenal attacker claims that the reason for the 22-year-old not showing good form for the Gunners this campaign is because he has not been set the same role for both club and country.
“I think he is in a Catch 22 at the moment,” Merson told Sky Sports. “He is playing in a holding role for England at the moment, then he goes back to Arsenal and plays in midfield where Ramsey will be in front of him, Arteta will be behind him and he will be in the middle.
“I think he looks a little lost in the middle and I think he should be the one who is playing further forward than Ramsey…
“I think he either plays as a holding man instead of Arteta or Flamini, like he has for England, or he plays further up. He is stuck at the moment at Arsenal, and that’s why he is not showing great form.”
Wilshere has the potential to be a ‘complete’ central midfielder but, as Merson points out, he is playing two different roles for England and Arsenal.
The 22-year-old has shown for England in recent games that he can be Arsenal’s long-term solution to defensive midfield, but the problem is that Mikel Arteta is ahead of him in that position.
Arteta is also the captain of Arsenal, which means that Wenger is unlikely to drop him. But between the Spaniard and Wilshere in the holding midfield role, it is the latter who should be given more chances if the Gunners want to save transfer money in the future.
