Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has highlighted the main problem that the team are facing at the moment.
When asked by the Champions Magazine if it has been difficult to find the right blend between attack and defence, the Spaniard said: “This is where we’ve struggled this season, you know, to find that balance.
“Every time we manage to keep a clean sheet we know that we have enormous chances to win the game. The better we get defensively, the easier it will be to win. That’s the main focus at the moment.”
Arteta has hit the nail on the head, but it is easier to point out the problem than to solve it.
The injury problems Arsenal have suffered defensively have not helped, but questions continue to be asked of the team’s midfield.
Mathieu Flamini and Arteta himself have been deployed in defensive midfield this season, but neither has looked particularly great in that role.
Jack Wilshere is now being backed by many to be used as the anchorman-in-midfield following his impressive performances for England in that role. Perhaps he would be able to do a better job.
One of the problems with Arsenal’s midfield is that they have too many similar players or players of similar quality. The midfielder who is head and shoulders above the others in terms of talent is Mesut Ozil, but he is current injured.
