Jamie Carragher believes that the Liverpool strikers will be under pressure this weekend.
The Reds will resume their 2014-15 Premier League campaign on Saturday when they take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Liverpool have struggled for goals this season, but many fans thought that the problem would be solved with Daniel Sturridge regaining his full fitness.
The trio have not scored in the Premier League this season, and Carragher believes that their work is cut out.
“I think the longer it goes on with none of the strikers scoring, you have to look at somebody else,” Carragher told Sky Sports when asked if Balotelli or Lambert should start against Palace.
“So far he has gone with Balotelli and not given Lambert that opportunity, he has used him as a squad player.
“Whether that will change this weekend or further in the future who knows, but whoever he goes with has to start scoring because none of them have netted in the Premier League this season.”
Rodgers does indeed face a problem in choosing which (misfiring) striker to start against Palace: Lambert or Balotelli.
Many fans would call for Lambert to start as Balotelli has been truly disappointing so far this season. The former Southampton star has not been given enough chances to show what he can do, and there is some sympathy for him.
But that could be the very reason why Rodgers could go with Balotelli. Having played regularly, the Italy international will not be ‘rusty’ or lack ‘match practice’, unlike Lambert.
Then there is the hope that Balotelli will start scoring…
