Hodgson gives ok to Arsenal & Liverpool England U21 call ups for Euro 2015

Roy Hodgson Euro 2012 England

The likes of Raheem Sterling, Jack Wilshere and Phil Jones could all be dropping down a level for the tournament.

Roy Hodgson has confirmed that any players eligible for selection for England Under 21 duty will be up for selection for next summer's European Under 21 Championship - regardless of their full international status.

Of the recent squad selected for the wins over Slovenia and Scotland, as well as players that may have been selected were they fit, there is quite an array of talent that may be called up upon for the tournament in the Czech Republic - including THREE from Arsenal.

Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere, Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers, John Stones, Phil Jones and Saido Berahino could all drop down to play for Gareth Southgate's side.

Much has been made in the past of the fact those called up to the full England squad have tended not to drop down to the Under 21 squads for international tournaments at that level.

It is a tactic Germany and Spain have employed in recent years, with some success, also creating a strong togetherness for those players that return to, as well as promoted, to the full side should they help the country enjoy a decent tournament.

Hodgson confirmed that he would only pick his squad for the games against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia after Southgate had named his players for the European Championship in June.

“It is very simple. My policy is this: After Gareth has picked his squad, I will pick my squad. I will take whatever is left," said the England boss.

‘’He can pick any Under-21s who are available and I will take the rest. He will speak to me, tell me what he wants to do. I can’t be fairer then to say it is his choice.

‘’Whether he will want to take all these players that is up to him, that’s another matter. You will have to speak to him.’’

Though it is likely those with over 10 caps, such as Wilshere, Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jones, will be deemed "senior" enough to be omitted, until former England centre back Southgate names his squad there's no telling who might be called upon.
