€10m international Simon Kjaer the ideal West Ham replacement for Reid?

Should West Ham make a move for Simon Kjaer?

The uncertainty over the future of West Ham defender Winston Reid drags on, with the defender no closer to signing a new contract.

He will be available to sign terms with another team in January to leave on a free transfer next summer, or the Hammers could even sell him on if he refuses to agree terms by time the transfer window comes around.

With that in mind, the club should be busy looking at alternative signings in case, and an ideal option is Lille defender Simon Kjaer.

The defender is 25-years-old and has been impressing for the Ligue 1 side. A Danish international, he is valued at around €10 million and has been linked also to Manchester United and Liverpool over the past year.

Earlier this month, Kjaer admitted he saw the Premier League as a logical next step in his career:

"I believe that the French Ligue 1 is a good stepping stone for anybody for a move to the Premier League.

"You see a lot of players crossing the Channel to play in England and I understand why. In many ways the style of Ligue 1 is much more physical than in some of the other big leagues and it would be more difficult going from the Serie A to Premier League because the style of play is very different."

Kjaer has been a regular at centre-back for Lille this campaign, averaging 7.7 clearances per game, and in all competitions making 2.3 tackles per appearance, even finding the scoresheet once.

He is currently playing Europa League football - although they appear set for elimination, four points off second in their group. West Ham's impressive form of late may convince him that more appearances in continental competition are on the horizon if he signs.

Should Reid depart, Kjaer would be in with a great chance of commanding a starting spot, a matter less assured at a club like Liverpool due to them having a higher number of options, even if they have been weaker as a unit this season.
