Grand Theft Auto's top 10 characters of all time

Grand Theft Auto Legends Patrick Brown

We've listed the top 10 Grand Theft Auto characters of all time, which wasn't exactly a simple task, but we've done it anyway.

It's arrived, the GTA V remastering on PS4 and Xbox One officially launched yesterday, and what better way to celebrate than to look back over the series and pick out some of the more colourful characters we've all met along the way.

Making this list was tough, really tough. The Grand Thefto Auto series has spawned a number of games, with a huge amount of memorable, loveable, and loathable characters. Whittling them down to just ten was no mean feat, but we've done it, so let's take a look at our top 10 Grand Theft Auto characters below.

Tommy Vercetti

GTA Vice City Screen 1

The protagonist from one of the greatest entries in the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA: Vice City, Tommy was most recoginsable for his colourful blue hawaiian shirt.

Spending 15 years in the slammer for the Forelli Mafia family, Tommy is keen to get back to work when he's released in 1986. We see him rise from a glorified Mafia thug all the way to becoming a Don in his own right.

Vice City clearly took many cues from Scarface's Tony Montana, however things turn out much better for Tommy. With his 'no b*llsh*t' attitude and willingness to kill anyone who gets in his way, he's one guy you don't want to mess with.

Ken Rosenberg

GTA Vice City Ken Rosenberg 1

Ken is a lawyer and one of Tommy Vercetti's only close friends in Vice City. This guy has a major cocaine problem, which only gets worse later on.

Sporting a colourful purple suit and the personality of a stereotypical 80s TV lawyer, Rosenberg stays loyal to Tommy throughout GTA: Vice City, despite temptations at every turn.

Kent Paul and Maccer

GTA San Andreas Kent Paul and Maccer 1

This British duo appeared across a couple of games in the GTA series. Kent Paul first appeared in GTA: Vice City, as a cocky cockney from Kent, who eventually ends up as the manager of Scottish 80s band Love Fist.

Maccer appears with Kent in GTA: San Andreas, in the middle of the desert after a rather eventful-sounding night. He's the lead singer of 'The Gurning Chimps', a band Paul is now the manager of.

The pair are voiced by Danny Dyer (Kent Paul) and Shaun Ryder (Maccer), and both use a wonderful mastery of the English language in the games.

Brucie Kibbutz

GTA IV Brucie 1

First appearing in GTA IV, Brucie is one of the main characters in the game, who's your stereotypical meat head type fella.

What can we say about Brucie? He's nuts. Which isn't really something you hear rarely with GTA games, everyone has their extreme quirks. He likes to work out, that's apparent from his muscular physique, but he also likes to top that off by injecting testosterone from Chilean bull sharks into himself. This in turn gives him some extreme 'roid rage'.

Brucie also makes constant remarks about not being gay, and how much he loves... women. Which all kinda makes it seem like he is in fact hiding his true sexuality.

Trevor Philips

GTA V Next Gen Screen 14

One of the three protagonists in the latest addition to the GTA series, Trevor is certainly a standout character, not only in GTA V, but across all GTA games.

His unpredictability, blatant disregard for anyone but himself, and hilarious random outbursts mean he certainly fits well inside the GTA universe. And the fact you can control him just makes it all the better.

One of the best things about him are his character transition scenes, when you switch characters in GTA V. You'll wonder where you're going to find him next. Examples include Trevor waking up in a dumpster, finding him drunk in the strip club, or waking up half naked on a beach surrounded by dead bodies. Oh, Trevor.

The mute protagonist from GTA III, Claude, wasn't even given a name until it was revealed during his appearance in GTA: San Andreas.

Now, he's not on here for his beaming personality and charm with the ladies, that's for sure. But, he's an iconic character that saw the GTA series transition to its fully 3D world we know today. And he's a pretty badass, silent killer too.

Lance Vance

GTA Vice City Lance Vance

Lance is a cocaine dealer, the very dealer who is initially part of a deal between Tommy Vercetti's Forelli family bosses in Vice City. Which subsequently went south.

Lance is a friend to Tommy throughout the game, and wears a bright white suit with purple shirt, which is only slightly overshadowed by the white Infernus he drives.

Spoiler alert - it turns out that Vance is a turncoat by the end of the game, culminating in a brilliant Scarface style end game mission.

Carl “CJ” Johnson

GTA San Andreas CJ 1

The main protagonist of GTA: San Andreas, CJ is a little different from the many other main characters across the series. He's not some stereotypical gun-toting gangbanger from the streets, he tried to get out of that game by moving to Liberty City.

Circumstance sees our anti-hero return to San Andreas however, and take up the mantle of reclaiming the Grove Street gang's turf.

CJ might not be the most colourful of character's in the GTA universe, but he's certainly unique - he has a sense of morality.

Lazlow Jones

GTA Vice City Lazlow 1

Lazlow is a character that's never actually appeared in any of the games until GTA V was released last year. He's always been a radio host... a rather awkward radio host.

His personality has developed over the years to become one of the most memorable and loved in the entire series. His appearance in GTA V sees his personality shift closer to the more sexually deviant persona he's developed over the years.

Niko Bellic

GTA IV Niko Bellic 1

Niko is GTA IV's protagonist, an ex-soldier who's travelled from Eastern Europe to Liberty City in search of a better life, off the back of promises made by his cousin Roman Bellic.

Nico's soon realises Roman's statements about being surrounded by beautiful women, and having lots of money aren't true. So Niko's want for 'The American Dream' makes him do whatever it takes in order to achieve that goal.

Not the most exciting of characters personality-wise, Niko still has much appeal. His 'do whatever it takes' attitude sees him involved in some rather unsavoury acts, all to keep himself and those he cares for safe.

And there you have it. Our top 10 characters from the GTA series. Made up of many memorable personalities, including some of the main protagonists in the franchise. Rockstar Games' ability to craft such unique and interesting personas is a testament to where they are now as a company - true industry legends.

Don't forget to let us know whether you agree or disagree with our choices. Who would be in your top 10?
