Sterne Agee expands midwest depository investment banking

Sterne Agee, one of the oldest and largest private and employee owned wealth management and institutional services firms in the the United States, has announced the additions of James F. Hemmer as Managing Director and Nathan F. Strall as Vice President to its Depository Investment Banking Group. Both will be based in the firm’s Chicago office.

“Over the past 2 years, Sterne Agee has followed through on its commitment to build a preeminent depository investment banking team both at a national level and in the Midwest specifically. The addition of two more highly experienced professionals is the latest step in our growth,” said Daryle DiLascia, Executive Managing Director and Head of Investment Banking. “We are proud of our ability to expand Sterne Agee’s capabilities and attract the top talent needed to best serve our clients. With these additions, we now have 40 investment banking professionals focused on the financial services industry.”

Hemmer becomes Sterne Agee’s twelfth managing director nationally, fourth based in Chicago, focused on delivering investment banking services to depository institutions. Before joining Sterne Agee, he was with Robert W. Baird & Co. where he also provided investment banking services to Midwestern banks and thrifts. Prior to that, he was with Sandler O’Neill & Partners, L.P., which he joined in 2003 as a Managing Director in the firm’s Investment Banking Group. Earlier in his career he worked for Lehman Brothers, McDonald Investments and The Chicago Corporation. He’s a veteran investment banker with more than 20 years of experience working with Midwest banks, thrifts and other financial services clients. Hemmer holds an MBA from Kellogg School of Management and a BA from Dartmouth College.

Strall rejoined Sterne Agee as a Vice President for investment banking in the Financial Institutions Group where his primary focus will be bank and thrift institutions. Previously, he worked for Lancaster Pollard where he focused on debt financing for health care, senior living and affordable housing clients. Before that, he worked in Sterne Agee’s Boston Office from 2009 to 2013 as an Associate in the Financial Institutions Group. He also spent three years as an analyst with Keefe, Bruyette & Woods where he provided analytical support on a variety of transactions including mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, valuation analysis, mutual conversion transactions and strategic financial planning for bank and thrift clients. Strall graduated from the Fisher School of Business at The Ohio State University with a BSBA in Finance.
