Left-back Raphael Guerreiro headed an injury-time winner as Portugal beat Argentina 1-0 in their friendly clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
The match was billed as a highly-anticipated duel between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but the world’s top two players lasted just 45 minutes before both being taken off.
Instead it was Guerreiro, a second-half substitute, who provided the one game-changing moment, meeting a right-wing cross from Ricardo Quaresma with a thumping header to break the deadlock in the second minute of stoppage time.
Portugal’s Ronaldo, making only his second appearance at his old ground since his then-world cup £80 million to Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2009, drew cheers from the 41,233 fans, but the superstar showed only glimpses of his class in his fleeting appearance.
United were well-represented on the night, but there was a moment of concern for their fans when Nani, currently on loan at Sporting Lisbon from the Premier League club, caught £59.7 million summer signing Angel Di Maria with a hefty challenge.
The Argentine winger shook off the after-effects, fortunately, before going off on the hour, with both players featuring among the gallery of images below.
