Ireland fans react to McGoldrick's international debut on Twitter

Republic of Ireland supporters were impressed with Ipswich Town man David McGoldrick's international debut last night.

As international debuts go, David McGoldrick's could hardly have gone any better.

The Ipswich Town forward was chosen to start for the Republic of Ireland against the USA last night and he performed a starring role in their success.

Ireland won the match 4-1 as they put in one of their most impressive displays in recent times.

Although the in-form Championship striker did not manage to hit the back of the net, he did create two goals for his nation and his presence was a threat all night.

It was a fine show of the Tractor Boys' forward's class, and it has left Ireland fans purring about his potential.

The likes of Robbie Keane and Shane Long have been in the Irish squad for some time, so it is a pleasant surprise to see a new forward coming through, and it seems McGoldrick has a lot to offer the national side.

Martin O'Neil was delighted with the 26-year-old front-man's display and felt that he and Derby County's Cyrus Christie, who both made their international debuts, sum up the wider aim of the national side.

"I think Christie and McGoldrick, two excellent debuts, are epitomising what we're trying to do," O'Neil said.

"He's [McGoldrick's] made a contribution which is important."

Ireland supporters were similarly pleased that the powerful striker could have such an impact in his first appearance and they will be looking for more of the same in the future.

The Irish are desperate to qualify for Euro 2016 and are locked in a hotly contested group, with a number of teams in with a chance of making it to France.

It means that any advantage that a side can gain is a major boost and having the added attacking impetus that McGoldrick offered last night should be a huge benefit.

Here is the best reaction to McGoldrick's performance from Ireland supporters on social media site Twitter.
