'I was number 10, the maestro' - Chelsea's Nemanja Matic on his former position

Chelsea Stadium Stamford Bridge

Chelsea's Nemanja Matic has been talking about where he played on the field in the past.

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic has revealed that he played as a number 10 when he was younger.

The Serbia international has become one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe, but in an interview with the club’s official website he said he used to play further up the field.

Chelsea are currently speaking to some of their stars about their younger selves, and Matic was the latest in the hot seat as he was asked where he played as a teenager.

“I was the number 10…the maestro,” he said. “My brother plays there now and he learned off me then – and he still does now.”

Matic still has an eye for goal, as a wonderful strike for Benfica that was later short-listed for the FIFA Puskas Award proved, and he has already netted three times this season despite his more withdrawn role.

In truth Matic could be anything he wants to be, such is his talent, and as effective as he is in defensive midfield you can be sure he will be showing off some more of those “maestro” skills” before the season is out.
