Javier Mascherano remains a hero at Liverpool, for the bristling way in which he used to get at big rivals Manchester United, and his excellent performances whilst at the club.
His relationship with Rafa Benitez was also considered to be one of the closest in the the Premier League. Both Spanish speaking Rafa got the best out of Mascherano at Liverpool after what was a terrible time at West Ham United in England.
Nowadays Benitez is at Italian side Napoli and has often been linked with bringing Mascherano to the Stadio San Paolo - to recreate the Liverpool connection.
Now Mascherano has discussed his relationship with Benitez and what was a potential Napoli move in the summer. And he once again made it clear that Benitez was very important to his career:
“I have a great relationship with Rafa.
“We often talk, and this summer I spoke to him about the possibility of joining him at Napoli.
“Benitez and [Pep] Guardiola are the Coaches to whom I owe my entire career, but no Italian team ever made a formal offer.”
Mascherano may not be on his way to Napoli any time soon but it again highlights the effect Benitez had on players during his Liverpool reign.
