England fans react to Stewart Downing's performance against Scotland on Twitter

England fans were disappointed with West Ham United star Stewart Downing's performance for the national side last night.

It has been two years since Stewart Downing was last included in the England team, but his first appearance back didn't exactly show Roy Hodgson what he has been missing.

Downing started in central midfield against Scotland in the Three Lions' 3-1 victory last night, but he failed to make any impact on the game and was substituted at half-time.

It was a disappointing display from the experienced campaigner, who was determined to prove that he merited a place in the squad.

Downing has been one of the Premier League's in-form players so far this season for West Ham United, but he failed to reproduce that form for his nation.

This partly wasn't his fault, as he was played out of position by Hodgson and, after waiting so long to break back into the team, that is sure to rankle.

Downing has thrived as the creative fulcrum for the Hammers, playing in behind two strikers, but he was expected to play on the left-hand side of three central midfielders yesterday evening and the match rather passed him by.

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa star has never been a physical presence and he found it hard to cope with the fast-paced nature of the match.

It was a display which frustrated some England supporters, but Hammers fans were quick to defend their player because of Hodgson's failure to select him in his favoured position.
