Different class: Comparing Andre-Pierre Gignac with current Tottenham strike trio

Marseille Velodrome

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Marseille player Andre-Pierre Gignac, so how does he compare to Spurs' current strikers?

Recent comments from former sporting director Damien Comolli have put Tottenham Hotspur in the frame for Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac.

At this stage it is mere speculation, but with the player set to be a free-agent in the summer Tottenham may be able to find a solution to their goal-scoring problems without spending a penny in transfer fees.

The queue is likely to be long for the 28-year-old if he does leave the Ligue 1 side, but there is a very simple reason why Tottenham would be wise to do everything in their power to sign him - even if that means making Comolli's prediction of a January bid come true.

Taking into account only league goals this season, Gignac has scored seven more than Mauricio Pochettino's current striking options combined.

The French international's 10 league goals this season puts Emmanuel Adebayor's two and Harry Kane's one to shame...and that is before you consider Roberto Soldado has yet to get off the mark in the English top-flight this campaign.

GoalsGoal assistsShots per gameKey passes per gameDribbles per gamePassing AccuracyMins played
Emmanuel Adebayor 2 1 1.8 1.2 1.7 76% 768
Harry Kane 1 1 1.14 0.43 1.14 75% 185
Roberto Soldado 0 1 1.4 1 0.8 73% 226
Andre-Pierre Gignac 10 1 3.6 0.7 0.8 73% 1,136

Gignac averages considerably more shots per match than any of the other three, which goes some way to explaining his goal-scoring record.  But he is also a supremely talented forward who does his job extremely well.

Of course it could be argued that Soldado used to be exactly that player, his form at Valencia now a distant memory, but Gignac will not cost anywhere near the £26million Tottenham paid for the Spaniard. In fact he may cost nothing at all.

And when you consider that he is currently streets ahead of what Pochettino can call on, surely an attempted move is a no-brainer.
