With options aplenty in the Arsenal striking department they allowed Benik Afobe a loan deal away from the club. After several months of struggles with a series of knee injuries the young Englishman was finally set to get a chance of proving himself elsewhere.
Arsenal therefore agreed for him to spend the season at MK Dons. At 21-years-old this was his final opportunity to prove himself worthy of a chance at the club. And he has certainly been in top form at Stadium:MK.
He has bagged 15 goals in 20 appearances in Milton Keynes - which has got some Arsenal fans very excited about his potential future.
Of course one of those goals even came against a side Arsenal will face at the weekend - Manchester United.
The League One side completed an excellent cup upset against an under-strength United side in the League Cup.
Afobe didn't score one, but twice in that game, as the Dons ran out 4-0 victors over their illustrious rivals.
Now he has been speaking about that game to Arsenal.com, as the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck hope to do the same on Saturday.
“When I came on I thought to myself, ‘wait a minute, there’s a chance of me getting on the scoresheet today’, and then I scored with my first touch.
“It was a great feeling, especially to do it on TV against a Premier League team. You build on it and get more confident as the game goes on. I couldn’t believe my second goal went in. Someone had to pinch me because it felt like I was in heaven at the time.
“Jonny Evans came across to tackle me and I tried to put it through his legs, got a lucky bounce, ricocheted through two players and then finished with my left foot past De Gea.
“It shows how confident I was to score with my left foot and when I picture it in my head now I still get chills. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had in football.”
We imagine Welbeck and co would settle for that feeling at the weekend.
