Manchester United record signing is an injury risk for the Red Devils' visit to Arsenal this weekend.
The Argentine was hurt during an international friendly with Portugal, injured by of all people, Nani.
The on loan Red Devil caught the winger with a late lunge, and while he was able to continue, he was clearly suffering and did not last the 90 minutes of the showpiece game at Old Trafford.
Di Maria said after the game, quoted by ESPN: "It was just a blow. I hope it doesn't swell anymore so I can play at the weekend."
Portugal won the game 1-0 through an injury time goal from Raphael Guerreiro, with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi largely quiet.
Argentina boss Tata Martino discussed the injury after the game, stating: "We don't think it is anything serious. It was quite a tough blow he took.
"It was a tough knock. It cut the skin a little bit. But we have had a look at it and we are evaluating the situation.
"We are having a look at some X-rays, some images that have been taken but in spite of that we don't think it is too serious."
With United already suffering injuries to Daley Blind and Michael Carrick, losing Di Maria in such circumstances would be disastrous for the Red Devils. Sporting Lisbon's winger Nani did his chances of a return no favours, in front of a watching Louis van Gaal.
Sun journalist Neil Custis gave extra insight on the injury, projecting the chances of the winger being ready to play in Saturday's game at The Emirates.
