Would re-signing Nemanja Vidic solve Manchester United's defensive woes?

Manchester United have been linked with a move to re-sign Nemanja Vidic, but should they pursue the Serbian?

With the January transfer window on the horizon, it's little surprise to see that Manchester United are being linked with a number of players once again.

Virtually hundreds of players were linked with moves to Old Trafford over the summer, but Louis van Gaal chose to bring in just six in his first transfer window as United boss.

In came Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao, as van Gaal splashed out around £150m on reinforcements.

After a sticky start for van Gaal, United appear to be heading in the right direction, and their recent 1-0 win over Crystal Palace leaves them just two points off a top four spot.

Yet whilst there are more positives than negatives for United right now, there is still the huge issue of the porous defence.

The Red Devils allowed experienced pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic to leave the club on free transfers this summer, but with van Gaal only signing Rojo, United have been left exposed.

A staggering injury crisis has seen Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and Rojo sidelined, which has forced youngsters such as Tyler Blackett and Patrick McNair in to the the heart of the defence.

Bringing in a strong centre back has to be a priority for van Gaal, and with links to Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar, it's clear that he wants to sign someone more in the mould of former United star Jaap Stam - an uncompromising centre back.

It took United and Sir Alex Ferguson some time to replace Stam after his 2001 departure to Lazio, but eventually, it was Vidic who assumed the mantle as United's rock in the defence.

The 33-year-old made 300 appearances during his time at Old Trafford, becoming a fan favourite for his dominant displays and warrior-like attitude, before moving on to Inter Milan this summer.

Yet it's been a nightmare start to life in Serie A for the former Spartak Moscow man, and after a number of poor displays, reports suggest that Inter will look to move on from Vidic after just six months in January.

That has led to rumours that he could make a stunning return to Manchester United, as they seek an experienced centre back to ease their woes.

There are still plenty of questions over whether Vidic has what it takes to be a force at the top level anymore, and with that in mind, would United fans be happy to see him back at Old Trafford? Vote below!
