Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric’s injury is unlikely to make things easier for Arsenal-linked Sami Khedira at Real Madrid.

One thing’s clear: Sami Khedira is not first choice in Real Madrid’s midfield anymore.

Despite winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany in Brazil in the summer and recovering from his injuries, the 27-year-old defensive midfielder has made just four appearances in La Liga and one in the Champions League so far this season.

One would have thought that former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric’s long-term injury which will see him remain out of action for the next three months would allow Khedira to get more minutes, but it appears that Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will choose Asier Illarramendi.

According to Madrid-based sports daily Marca, the reasons are “political”.

“Khedira has rejected a number of new contract offers over the last 12 months - Real Madrid have not heard from his agents since July - and will be free to sign a pre-contract elsewhere in just 43 days,” states the report.

“While Ancelotti and the club see eye to eye on the fact that the 27-year-old should not be allowed to leave in January under any circumstances, they disagree on how the contract rebel should be treated.

"Nevertheless, the higher-ups won't cause any trouble if the coach ultimately does decide to use the Germany international.”

It appears that Khedira remains an important part of the Madrid squad, and rightly so. After all, to win La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League this campaign, Ancelotti needs to have a strong squad.

Khedira himself has said that he is not looking to leave the 2014 Champions League winners in January (click here to read more), and with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger not appearing too keen on signing a defensive midfielder (click here to read more), the former Stuttgart man may not have too many options.

Premier League leaders Chelsea have been touted with a move for Khedira, but one wonders why manager Jose Mourinho would want to sign his former player when he has got a number of options in defensive midfield.

Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in Khedira, but one has to ask whether Pep Guardiola’s side need another midfielder this season.

What Khedira needs to do now is work hard in training and make the most of his chances when they are thrown at him.
